It was supposed to be a normal day of training on the 3 Dimensional Gears for the recruits. Yet competition was already brewing amongst the trainees. Specifically: two people taking down “titan” after “titan” with increasing ferocity.
“Come on Jaeger, I thought you were better than this!”
The girl taunted the rage filled green-eyed boy, her [h/c] hair whipping the air as she soared in the air. She placed her blades at an attack position as she spotted a “titan”. Her eyes gleamed with enthusiasm as she forced her gear to accelerate her body towards her target and carved her blades as deeply as she could into the “flesh”, successfully cutting a large chunk of the fabric off of the practice titan.
“Yes~!” she yelled triumphantly and turned in time to see Eren slice off part of the neck on her “kill”.
“Too slow, Jaeger, you’ll be eaten in real life if you can’t make your own kills!” the girl teased, sticking her tongue out at the brunette below.
“Shut up [Last name], I can kill all of them by myself!” Eren yelled defiantly as she flew overhead.
She rolled her eyes, “Sure you can, when Mikasa is with you.”
She wasn’t sure if he heard her snarky comment, but he began to look more determined to beat the girl than ever looking for his own “titans” to kill. As his figure disappeared into the woods, a flash of red followed him, no doubt Mikasa.
[Name] sighed inwardly and she flew in a different direction hoping she wasn’t being tailed.

The water afterwards was refreshing for the trainees as they boasted or groaned about their “kills” that day. Jean kept complaining about everyone else taking his “kills”, but [Name] and Sasha chided that it was his fault for being slow.
“A prey doesn’t sit and wait for you to get it,” Sasha added and gleefully took a large sip of water.
“You gotta be able to move fast if you’re even trying to kill anything, Jean.”
“When did you start siding with potato girl, [Name]?” the brunette growled angrily, his eyebrows furrowing.
[Name] ignored his question and took a sip of water from her own sack. As she took her time and brushed her hair from her neck, Jean became increasingly angered.
“Well, if you talk so high and mighty, how many of those dummies did you kill?”
Jean stared down at the girl as if hoping to humiliate her in front of the other trainees. [Name] pretended to count a distant number as her fingers kept moving restlessly and her eyes looked up innocently at the sky.
“More than you, and I got to those by myself and didn’t get tailed by others.”
Most of the trainees snorted into their water sacks while others tried to hide grins and Jean clenched his fists angrily.
“You trying to start something, [Last name]?” he growled while some of the trainees backed up out of instinct.
“Oh Jean, you’re only realizing that now? I can’t believe someone like you would want to join the MP, seeing at how starry-eyed and stupid you are at other topics,” [Name] said with a bit of irritation; for some reason she felt like fighting, and it almost didn’t matter who it was.
The brunette angrily stood up and grabbed at [Name]’s shirt, jerking her upwards.
“You’d better apologize or else-“
“Or else what, Jean dear; are you planning to punch the living daylights out of me? That’s not really what a man would do, now would he? I bet you couldn’t dent a tree, seeing as how you slack off during hand-to-hand combat training so often.”
His teeth were bared and [Name] was ready for the impact of a fist before a voice spoke up.
“Cut it out you two, if you want to spar, do it during self-defense training.”
The two trainees turned to see Eren standing next to his friends Mikasa and Armin.
“Butt out Jaeger, she started it,” Jean growled.
“If it’s about scores, then just take it up to the people who keep track of it Jean, are you stooping that low to hit a girl out of anger?”
Jean backed off, letting go of the girl’s shirt roughly. Oddly enough, she felt relieved when noticing that her eyes weren’t going to be socked out. A bell sounded and the trainees headed for self-defense. Jean gave off a death glare to Eren and stalked off with the others.
“Hey, Jaeger!” [Name] walked up to Eren and the boy told his friends to go ahead of him. Mikasa looked at the girl with some sort of wariness before being led off by Armin.
As the two stood alone on the grounds, [Name] tried not to notice the awkwardness of their conversation.
“Well uh… thanks for helping me back there with Jean. I’ve been feeling a little out of it lately, and you spared me a few bruises.”
“It’s not a problem, a friend for a friend, right?” Eren asked.
[Name] tried hard to hide a giggle, but it escaped anyway. “I didn’t know we were on the scale of being labeled as ‘friends’.”
The green-eyed boy looked at the girl with confusion. “Is there something wrong with that?”
She shook her [h/c] hair to clear up the misunderstanding. “No, being friends is alright, besides, you did help me. If you’re ever in a pinch, you can always call my name.”
“Your first name or your last?” the boy scratched his head in slight confusion. “I mean it feels weird to call your friends by their last names, but if you want to be formal I don’t mind.”
It was a fair question, yet it still made [Name]’s cheeks flush slightly.
“M-my first name is fine, we are friends, right?”
“Alright, I won’t forget, [Name].”
Now she wished she could take back what she had said and dumped her head in a barrel of water if she could. Her heart also was pumping as if she had just finished running a mile or two.
“You’d better keep up to your promise then,” [Name] grinned pulling on a façade as she lightly punched her open palm. “Just ‘cause we’re on friendly terms now, don’t expect me to go easy on you during training or anywhere else.”
Eren grinned back, “Right back at you, I’ll send you flying!”
“Try me,” [Name] grinned and walked off.
“Hey, [Name]!” Eren called and the girl turned around. “Does that mean you’ll call me ‘Eren’?”
“No exception for you, Jaeger,” she teased, brushing her hair over her shoulders.
“Huh? That’s not fair! At least try call my name when you’re in trouble!”
[Name] waited to consider it. She wanted to call his name and relish the words on her tongue, but she knew better. The more people she became friends with, the more she opened her heart to others, the more likely she’d break when she is left alone in the cruel and merciless world; to suffer through the countless corpses of her comrades.
“Don’t bet on it,” [Name] said finally and when she turned, she briskly walked away without turning back.

Armin saw the body of a girl on the ground near a building with its roof torn into pieces and almost felt like throwing up. He recognized her face almost instantly. [Name]’s [h/c] was tossed out behind her head; her usual [e/c] eyes were dull without her spark of life. Her right leg was missing along with most of her left waist. Blood was caked down from her nose and streamed from her mouth. Most of her blades were gone, and she still gripped two tightly in her hands. Judging by how her body was sprawled on the ground and the Titan husks they found nearby, she at least went down with a good fight. But still, to find someone you knew on the field, someone you hoped would be alive, it was almost too much for him to bear.
The young boy wobbled up unsteadily to the girl and gave her the soldier’s salute, wondering how long she lasted before Eren had successfully plugged up the hole in his titan form. Armin’s mind produced another of his “what-if” moments, and pictured [Name] cheering on Eren in his titan form, and celebrating when the hole was closed. He wondered why none of them noticed she wasn’t with them when they went to HQ to stock up on gas; he wondered how Eren would react to find out how many of their comrades had died.
“…Rest in peace, [Name].”
A person with a clipboard passed by Armin and asked for the corpse’s name, and he gave it. Tears fell down his face as he apologized to the dead girl.
“I’m sorry… if-if there was a way we could have saved more lives, I wish you could have been one of those lives we saved.”
Mikasa walked up to Armin and grasped his shoulder as [Name]’s body was being hoisted onto the cart full of other corpses.
“Armin, you did all you could.”
Armin did not reply as the two friends watched in silence as another one of their comrades was taken from the battlefield.
Much further away, Eren slept soundly in his small prison cell, unaware of his predicament.  He dreamt he saw [Name] fighting off Titans, yelling, cursing, as she watched her comrades get eaten one by one until she was the last left. She fought until her blades dulled or broke; she fought even when she lost her right leg. Soon, her body was tossed to the ground when the Titans heard a loud roar and she looked up to the bright blue sky.
Her lips parted in pain as she flinched, her left waist now gone. The voice that gave off a strong will of life was now hoarse as she cried out one name: “Eren”. She strained her eyes to stare upwards, trying to smile, and then, her last breath was taken. The name she called echoed through the air, but the person she called for, would never come.
